Matter conduct MAP with Teejay Lanka

Matter is delighted to officially announce their partnership with Teejay Lanka PLC, the first Multinational Textile Manufacturing entity in Sri Lanka.

The Matter team is currently in Sri Lanka, delivering a Microfibre Assessment Programme (MAP) at one of Teejay's manufacturing facilities.

MAP is an initial assessment conducted by Matter to understand the quantity of microfibres released during the textile manufacturing process. The programme provides brands and manufacturers with crucial data and insights, along with tailored recommendations to guide towards an appropriate solution to significantly reduce microfibre emissions in their facilities.

Teejay, Sri Lanka’s premier and leading multinational manufacturer of weft knitt fabric manufacturer, cater to world-renowned brands such as PVH, Marks & Spencer, Nike, Uniqlo, VS & Co. and Oniverse.

Teejay ‘believes that driving sustainability and innovation, and creating partnerships and bonds are key components of its corporate DNA’. The commitment to sustainable production has allowed Teejay to optimise its production capacities.

Having recently announced their signing of the BlueSign Agreement, Teejay will undergo a rigorous assessment to earn a certification that will affirm their intentions of creating a safer workplace and textile products that are less impactful on the environment and people.

Matter's collaboration with Teejay reaffirms the Group's commitment to promoting sustainable production through concrete actions.

Teejay Group CEO, Pubudu De Silva mentioned that partnering with Matter to undertake the Microfibre Assessment Programme is a significant step in Teejay’s ongoing commitment to sustainability as outlined in its Abhivarah 2030 strategy.

At Teejay, we believe that understanding and mitigating our environmental impact is essential to our mission of driving innovation and creating a more sustainable future. This initiative aligns with our goals of circularity and effective waste and water management for microfibers” Mr De Silva further said that, this collaboration underscores Teejay’s dedication to producing high-quality textiles while ensuring that its processes are environmentally responsible

Adam Root, CEO and Founder of Matter, commented on the collaboration, saying:

I’ve always believed that what gets measured gets changed, and Matter’s pioneering Microfibre Assessment Programme (MAP) allows us to show businesses what their true microfibre emissions are, allowing them to make educated decisions on how to better their environmental footprint.

As engineers and a manufacturer, Matter understands the pressure of running a sustainable business whilst delivering product on-time, on-spec, and on-cost. Built for industry, this programme was designed around how things really are. We believe in working with brands and manufacturers rather than against them.

Forward-thinking manufacturers with established high-volume production will lead us to a more circular future. We are delighted to partner with Teejay and Brandix and be part of their journey as they achieve this.

Microfibres are released into the water and air across various stages of textile production and throughout the life of a garment. Every year, the equivalent to 700 million polyester shirts are released into the ocean from microfibre shedding*. Matter estimates that a staggering 3 billion more are being caught and lost in unrecoverable sludge.

Matter is a Bristol based company that develops technology to capture and recycle micropollutants. Matter have developed a patented filter solution - Regen – which uses a unique regenerative process to efficiently separate microfibres from wastewater. The self-cleaning provides outstanding performance, better user experience, and a truly sustainable design for domestic, commercial and industrial applications.

Matter is partnering with leading fashion brands and manufacturers to use their technology to tackle microfibre pollution across the textiles supply chain. Matter believes that microfibres should be captured at the source, before they become pollutants and are lost as a resource that can't be reused. The three-point circular approach enables the textile industry to capture and return value from microfibres.

MAP is a great first step for collaboration between Matter, clothing brands, and manufacturing facilities to identify microfibre emissions and build solutions that drive impact at scale.

Understanding the large quantities of microfibres released during the textile manufacturing process is vital to comprehending the size, location, and nature of the issue. Conducting a MAP is a crucial activity to gain 'on the ground' insight into microfibre pollution in specific facilities and supply chains. This allows Matter to inform solutions appropriate for the specific location and make recommendations to stop microfibre pollution at the source.
