Matter are B Corp certified

Matter is excited to announce they have officially become B Corp certified in their 6th year of operating.

Matter, pioneers in the micro-pollution filtration space, have today announced that it has been certified as a B Corporation™. The certification solidifies the business’ mission to create a positive impact and prevent microplastics from entering our natural environment.

The certification follows swiftly after the release of Matter’s 2023 Impact Report, in which Matter emphasised its commitment to B Corp standards.

Matter, who develops technology to capture and recycle microplastics and microfibres for the good of our planet, has joined a global community of businesses leading the transformation of the global economic system.

With a Bristol-based HQ, Matter becomes part of the growing UK B Corp community that officially reached 2,000 in April of this year. Companies vary hugely, with household names such as The Big Issue, FatFace, and Emma Bridgewater already certified, alongside local Bristol companies like Ecologi and Neighbourly.

To mark the occasion, the Matter team celebrated by participating in local volunteering for the Dame Emily Park Project. The project focuses on restoring Emily Dame Park, and the Matter team contributed by building a bug hotel, planting bushes, and creating a mini pond area for local wildlife.

Certified B Corporations are companies that are verified by B Lab ‘to meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.’

In a recent blog, B Lab described B corporations as businesses ‘that prioritise people and the planet alongside profit. They measure and improve their impact on their employees, customers, local communities and the environment and make a legal commitment to ensure this expanded duty of care is locked in for the future.’

To certify, a company should consider a variety of steps. These 7 steps have been listed on the official B Corporation website:

  • Eligibility

  • Pricing

  • The B Impact Assessment

  • B Corp Legal Requirements

  • The review process

  • Reporting your impact

  • Joining the community

Matter Sustainability Officer, Laura Humphreys, commented on the news and what it means for Matter as a business:

Laura Humphreys, Sustainability Officer

“Becoming a B Corp is a journey which aligns with our goals and direction as a sustainable business.

We want to be a better company, not just design better products for bigger profits.

We were thankful to have the support of our B Leader, Andy Hawkins from Business on Purpose, who mentored us in how to meet the assessment standards as we improved our processes.

However, our B Corp journey does not end here. Matter is set to improve year on year and continue to build meaningful impact in both our local and global community that meets the needs of the planet and people.”

Matter CEO and Founder, Adam Root, also spoke on the B Corp certification news, saying:

Adam Root, CEO and Founder.

“The foundational principle of Matter was built around the cradle-to-cradle framework. Social fairness for us represents a key pillar of running an ethical business.

For over two years, people planet and profit have been written into our articles of association.

Today I am proud to announce we have met the threshold to be officially registered as a B Corp.

We passionately believe that all businesses regardless of scale can do the same and hope more will join us on this exciting journey.”
